Heads up! Parking will be limited in downtown on Saturday, 8/8/26, due to the Padres' home game, so we highly suggest booking your parking spot in advance

William Heath Davis Jr. “Kanaka Davis”

A native Hawaiian, in 1822, William Heath Davis Jr. was born in Honolulu, within the Kingdom of Hawaii. Davis’s great-grandfather on his mother’s maternal side was High Chief Kalaniho’oulumokuikekai, making him a descendant of the prominent Mahi family line.

Today, William Heath Davis is honored for his vision of “New Town San Diego,” as well as for his many other contributions, including his role as a prolific writer who helped to shape our understanding of early California and Hawaiian history through his chronicles and vivid descriptions of notable people, places, and events within his lifetime.
